USS Connecticut Underwater Collision

The USS Connecticut, a Seawolf class submarine (SSN-23) struck an unknown object whilst submerged in the South China Sea October 2, 2021. Reports are saying that at least a dozen sailors received injuries as a result of the collision. The submarine remains in operable condition and is stable.

“The submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticut’s nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational. The extent of damage to the remainder of the submarine is being assessed. The U.S. Navy has not requested assistance. The incident will be investigated.” according to a press release from The United States Navy.

The United States Naval Institute was quick to point out on their Twitter feed that this was not the first time the USS Connecticut came into contact with an unexpected object..

More details will emerge in the coming days regarding the extent of the injuries those on board suffered, as well as the overall condition of the submarine. If one thing is clear, the sub is able to make way safely under it’s own power.
